Berlin '36
Berlin '36 is a fascinating story about an unusual friendship in Nazi Germany, based on real events.
It is the Berlin Olympic Games, and Gretel, Germany's best woman high jumper, is being blackmailed by the Nazis to return to Germany in order to placate the Americans, who have threatened an Olympic boycott if Jewish athletes are barred from competing.
To ensure Hitler is not embarrassed by a Jewish athlete winning a gold medal for Germany, the Nazis conspire to replace Gretel at the last moment. Neither Gretel nor her teammates have any idea that her rival is, in fact, a man passing as a woman. And there is no way the Nazis could predict that the pair would become friends.
