Me and the Jewish Thing
Ulrik Gutkin, 43 mins, Denmark, 2009, Danish with English subtitles

A funny and original autobiographical documentary from Denmark with a classic premise.

Jewish filmmaker Ulrik Gutkin and his non-Jewish girlfriend, Signe, are overjoyed at the birth of their first child. Boys in Ulrik's family have always been circumcised, but Signe has her own ideas about such things and the place of her own cultural heritage in this mix.

Undaunted, Ulrik tries to convince her, but in Signe he has met his match. Her probing, thoughtful but supportive questions force Ulrik to better connect with and learn more about his own Jewish background in order to decide which traditions to pass on to their son.

Ladino - 500 Years Young
Rina Papish, 54 mins, Israel, 2006, Hebrew, Spanish and Ladino with English subtitles

Yasmin Levy, the electrifying 34-year-old Israeli singer, is following in the footsteps of her father, Yitzhak, a revered singer who dedicated his life to recording and documenting the musical culture of Ladino (Jud├Žo-Spanish), the ancient language of the Jews of Spain.

With her distinctive and emotive style, she has brought a new interpretation to this repertoire, fusing it with the more 'modern' sounds of Andalusian Flamenco and other influences, and, in the process, becoming an international singing sensation.

Screens with: Children of the Bible (Nitza Gonen, 53 mins, Israel, 2009, Hebrew and Amharic with English subtitles), a bright, uplifting music documentary about the Ethiopian-Israeli rapper Jeremy "Cool" Abash.
