Based on the celebrated best-selling novel by Ayelet Waldman, Portman stars as Emilia Greenleaf, a successful New York attorney, grieving the loss of her newborn daughter, Isabel, whilst also attempting to mend a fractured relationship with her new stepson.
Told partly in flashback, hers is a life full of inevitable emotional complications. As a 'second wife', Emilia attracts the unyielding ire of her husband's embittered and wronged, non-Jewish ex-wife - superbly played by Lisa Kudrow - and is forced to contend with the resentment of his precocious son. But all this changes when the cause of their newborn daughter's death is finally confirmed.
