Three generations of a Jewish family hit the road in this bittersweet contemporary comedy from Belgium.
Simon Konianski, a 35-year-old slacker, is forced to move back in with his father Ernest when he breaks up with his partner. Ernest, a Holocaust survivor, stubbornly agrees, but gleefully takes out a lifetime of disappointments on his overeducated and underemployed son.
Unable to escape, Simon can't help himself in waging his own war back. But when his father suddenly passes away, Simon endeavours to fulfil Ernest's last wish.
Piling into a temperamental wagon with his meddling uncle, aunt and young son, the family sets off across the landscapes and folkways of Eastern Europe for the Ukraine, on a picaresque quest, coffin in tow.
Loaded with Jewish references and observational wit, this movie is a drily funny portrait of the post-Holocaust generation.
