Sweet and Lowdown

Woody Allen brings his usual comic verve to this love letter to jazz's swing era.

Sean Penn stars as musician Emmet Ray, a first class scoundrel who often brags that he is the second greatest jazz guitarist, second only to his hero, Django Reinhardt. This self-deprecating hero-worship often leads Emmet into destructive behaviour in his career and personal life.

When a mute seamstress (played with heartbreaking poignancy by Samantha Morton) comes into his life, this abrasive and painfully honest 'player' finds himself falling for her adoring devotion and loyalty.

This bittersweet love story is one of Allen's most affecting films. Both Penn and Morton were nominated for an Oscar for their roles.
