Gaultier's unique aesthetic was the perfect choice for directors Mac Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet to clothe the colourful characters in the spectacularly strange world of The City of Lost Children.

Having previously contributed designs for Almodovar's Kika, Gaultier would later go on to create the unforgettable costumes for Luc Besson's The Fifth Element. But The City of Lost Children was the first film to fully explore Gaultier's vision.

The film tells the story of a little girl and a sentimental strongman who join forces to save a small boy's dreams from a madman's master plan.

Gaultier had seen Carot and Jeunet's first film, Delicatessen, and was attracted to their dark, disturbing world. After meeting the duo, the feeling was mutual and Gaultier set to work.

With Ron Pearlman, Daniel Emilfork, Judith Vitet and Dominique Pinon.

"Jean Paul Gaultier has truly outdone himself, and that takes some doing." Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
