The Day Before: Jean Paul GaultierDirector Loic Prigent has carved out a fashionable niche in documentary filmmaking, capturing the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs. He now trains his camera on Jean Paul Gaultier, spending 36 hours with the designer on the eve of his 2010 Autumn-Winter Haute Couture collection.
In what could be considered his return 'home', Gaultier's collection pays tribute to cinema and its galaxy of stars. Film is more than a passing reference for Gaultier; it was Falbalas, the 1944 film set in a Parisian couture house, that inspired him to devote his life to fashion.
35 years later, Gaultier pays homage to Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Mae West (among others) and incorporates film itself into his glorious designs. And, as tradition dictates, he finishes with a wedding dress, which just happens to resemble a shorter version of the one in Falbalas.
