Les Falbalas de Jean Paul Gaultier
This documentary about Jean Paul Gaultier has more than a serendipitous connection to its director, Tonie Marshall. Gaultier was inspired to become a fashion designer after seeing Marshall's mother, actress Micheline Presle, in the 1944 film Falbalas.
Marshall retraces Gaultier's private and professional development. Entering the world of fashion without any formal training, he would instead learn his craft at the houses of Pierre Cardin and Jean Patou. Launching his first women's collection in 1977, it was his second collection for men in 1985 (when he paraded skirts) that set the tone for what was to come.
The now quintessential French fashion designer turned hybridisation into a signature style, redefined haute couture and contines to create exciting fashion.
With Catherine Deneuve, Régine Chopinot, Anna Pawlowski and Micheline Presle.
