'Into your league receive me, who was happily the first
That found deliverance in the land of freedom.
To your brave hands I now entrust my rights.
Will you protect me as your citizen?'

Friedrich von Schiller, Wilhelm Tell

ACMI celebrates the almost anarchistic potency of emotions in this cinematic exploration of idealism and the human spirit. Land & Freedom pays testament to the immigrant and the explorer, leaving the Old World in search of the New. To those hoping for a better future, taking incalculable risks with no guarantee of success and shedding the skin of the past to make way for the new.

To the protesters, willing and unwilling, political and peaceful, proponents for change, seeking resolutions, sacrifice notwithstanding. And to the ordinary people, caught up in tumultuous and extraordinary situations, changing them forever.

Direct from a world sweep of major film festivals, ACMI proudly brings you the Australian premiere of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others (Toronto Film Festival), Francisco Vargas Quevedo's The Violin (Cannes Film Festival), Yousaf Ali Khan's Almost Adult (London Film Festival) and Ronit Avni & Julia Bacha's Encounter Point (Tribeca Film Festival).
