Race Around the Square: An ACMI Challenge

make a film @ acmi extension
Make a Film @ ACMI Extension Program

This innovative, exciting workshop is designed to demystify the filmmaking process and to make filmmaking more accessible to students across the curriculum.

Students work in small teams to plan, script, locate, perform in, direct and shoot a 60 second film, while working against the clock! Along the way, there is a strong emphasis on screen based storytelling, team work and creativity.

Race around the Square is based on a resourceful filmmaking technique - the 'in-camera edit'. Each film is shot sequentially, shot by shot including titles, credits and any sound effects and the result is then screened 'as is'. There is no external editing or additional sound and music.

This technique is used successfully, with much enthusiasm, imagination and ingenuity, in a number of short film competitions.

The workshop process promotes powerful contemporary learning and supports the implementation of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), drawing together the three strands and supporting student growth across the domains.

Students will develop:

  • understanding of the structure and features of a short film
  • awareness of film genres
  • understanding of key camera angles, movement and shots in constructing a screen based narrative
  • practical production skills including scriptwriting, characterisation, production design, use of a digital movie camera, sound recording, acting and directing
  • team work, time management and planning skills.
Race around the Square promotes powerful learning using technologies and practices which connect school learning strongly with communities and practice beyond the classroom. It also supports the development of a range of skill sets central to dealing with a changing world, including high level personal, communication and social competencies needed to work within groups.

The students' final film productions are provided on DVD for further viewing, analysis and enjoyment.
