| Art That Moves |
Roger Horrocks explores what the world of art - and the world in general - may have looked like through the eyes of an artist whose primary interest was "the mystery of motion."
The event will feature the Australian Premiere of
Art That Moves - The World of Len Lye (2009), an 18 minute film that goes 'inside the head' of the remarkable New Zealand-born artist. It starts in the 1910s with Lye as a teenager having his 'Eureka!' moment that movement could be the basis for a new kind of art. Through a series of dramatised scenes, the film tracks the development of Lye's thinking and ends with his creation of films and kinetic sculptures.
This unusual film offers new insights into Lye's art and his highly original aesthetic. The film has been directed by Roger Horrocks (Lye's biographer and one-time assistant) and produced by Shirley Horrocks. The camerawork is by Leon Narbey (cinematographer of Whale Rider and Dean Spanley) and the music is by noted New Zealand composer Eve de Castro Robinson, both of whom have a special interest in Lye's work. The artist's words are read by Michael Hurst.
Roger Horrocks is the author of
Len Lye: A Biography (2001), and
Art that Moves, a sequel that examines Lye's ideas about the art of motion, which will be published later this year. He is a widely published film historian and is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Auckland.
