Alex Gibney's dazzlingly assembled documentary on the life and stimulant-enhanced times of Hunter S. Thompson owes something of its propulsive stylistic rhythms to the gonzo journalist's own
modus operandi. A prodigious amount of expertly edited archival footage, home movies, audiotapes and photos is intercut with wry, incisive and candid new interviews with creative collaborators, co-conspirators, and occasional antagonists.
Gibney's fast-paced and laudable enterprise is additionally propelled by a soundtrack worthy of a Scorsese movie. Narrated by Johnny Depp, the film features interviews with (among others) Ralph Steadman, Jann Wenner, Tom Wolfe and Jimmy Carter.
"Cheers to Alex Gibney (Oscar winner for
Taxi to the Dark Side) for this mesmerizing documentary about the people, places and substances that altered the mind and battered heart of the Kentucky-born inventor of gonzo journalism" Peter Travers,
