http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ Produced in Melbourne and screening on the Seven Network,
Short Cuts is set in a Year 9 Media Studies class. Its stories explore how the video camera can be a tool of expression, exploration and communication - and also of manipulation, secrecy and lies. Slowly, the characters find ways of using the camera and in the process, find out more about themselves, each other, their friends, their families and the world.
This workshop enables students to produce a mini episode of an ACMI 'spin off' called
Shorter Cuts.
This program is designed to:
- introduce students to the production process through practical workshops in the ACMI studio
- introduce students to, or extend their technical knowledge of scriptwriting, directing, camera, acting, sound and other technical aspects of television production
- further develop student's media production and media analysis skills.
Production Experience 'Super Geek 2'
This hands-on experience in Studio 1 explores directing, camera, sound, scripting and acting. Using virtual sets, each group of students will produce a piece with themselves inserted into a short, pre-shot Shorter Cuts scenario. Students work in teams and are involved in production as well as acting.
In this story, ACMI becomes Sunridge High. Oscar from Short Cuts is auditioning for roles in his latest film 'Super Geek 2'. He tries to get the Short Cuts kids to do it but has no luck, so he turns to the 'new class' for help. Your students become part of the story, auditioning for selected roles in the new film. They need to bring in simple props and costumes and have rehearsed for how they might act the role they are 'vying' for. Oscar responds to these attempts along the way. The final product is the original story with your student segments added in - giving each version a different spin.
Teacher Materials
The activities provided in the accompanying Teacher Kit are designed to assist students to develop a range of literacy outcomes. Detailed, pre and post ACMI visit, teaching and learning activities support and extend the experience in the classroom. This includes guidelines for the preparation of the 'Super Geek 2' production activity.
