Animals Distract Me + Green Porno

As part of its First Look program, from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 January ACMI presents a special double bill about creatures great and small with Animals Distract Me (2010) and Green Porno (2008), starring the directing and acting talents of Hollywood icon, Isabella Rossellini.

Looking at the animal kingdom from the perspective of the creatures around her - including the guide dog she trains named Sweety and the microscopic dermodex that live on her eyelashes, Rossellini channels the spirit of Charles Darwin (amusingly played by Rossellini herself) to explain evolution's impact on the animal world.

Taking Sweety along to a photo shoot with fashion photographer Fabrizio Ferri, discussing ethical eating with renowned Italian chef Mario Batali, and speaking gibberish with fashion editor Andre Leon Talley to illustrate how dogs perceive conversation, Animals Distract Me employs humour and fantasy to show how animals get the better of Rossellini's attention during a day in New York City.

In Green Porno, a series of award-winning short films commissioned by the Sundance Channel, Rossellini reveals the mating secrets of the animal kingdom. Dressed as a spider, a bee and a praying mantis, Rosellini assumes the personality traits of these creatures to inhabit a world of make-believe where cardboard and pipe-cleaners are used to offer an amusing but educational demonstration of how animals mate.

An animal lover since childhood, Rossellini told the Bright Lights Film Journal: "When I look at the animal world and the variety of the things that they do, it helps me to be more open-minded. It gives you doubts about certitudes, about who we are. You can get lessons from a spider walking in your sink!"

Co-directed by Jody Shapiro, a recent guest at ACMI during the screenings of his documentary How to Start Your Own Country, the Green Porno series won Best Individual Performance (Isabella Rossellini) and Best Experimental work at the 2009 Webby Awards.

ACMI Film Programmer Kristy Matheson says, "You don't have to be an animal lover to be swept away by these films. With the Green Porno series and Animals Distract Me, Isabella Rossellini showcases how inventive, playful and downright informative the filmic medium can be."

The First Look season of Animals Distract Me and Green Porno screens at ACMI in Melbourne from 5-8 January 2012. For program information please visit acmi.net.au
