adventures of power

Ari Golds in Adventures of Power
Ari Golds is Power

"The rowdy response to Power's midnight unspooling at Sundance establishes the pic's cult movie cred" Variety Magazine.

Straight from its World Premiere at Sundance to Karlovy Vary, Ari Gold's feature film debut Adventures of Power will have its Australian Premiere at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) on January 16 2009.

Imagine a character that is a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Owen Wilson. He works in the mines with his union leader father. His real passion is drumming; only he wasn't allowed real drums, so he took up air-drumming. Meet Power.

Power knows he has talent. Although he is mocked and ridiculed in his hometown somewhere in New Mexico, there is a place he can go where people like him fit in. It just so happens that there is an air-drumming contest in New York City.  With 80's power pop to fuel his journey, Power hitch-hikes across America to train with a former funk drummer turned air-drum trainer and his motley crew of rockers.

Along the way Power meets his love interest Annie, (Shoshannah Stern), deaf in real life, Annie is moved by Power's physicality and feels the music through his movement.

A kind of Footloose cum Napoleon Dynamite, Adventures of Power is a music-driven comedy about a working class loser who loves to air-drum because "it's the feeling" he tells us,  "I could bring this feeling to everyone".

The true-to-its-era soundtrack is made up of mostly original numbers by Gold's brother Ethan. Reminiscent of Ween, Dr. Dog and the Beach Boys, the soundtrack pays homage to the 80's with a definite penchant for country.

Michael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap), Jane Lynch (Best in Show) and Adrian Grenier (Entourage) star alongside Gold in his endearingly oddball feature debut.

You will either be laughing or crying by the end of the film. Reclaim your inner power at Freaky Fridays @ ACMI on Fri 16 Jan 10pm and Fri 23 Jan 10pm, 2009. Screening details are here
