Live in the Studio
Dr Who
The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) continues its live TV appreciation program Live in the Studio from Thursday 27 May 2010.
Once a month, ACMI's Studio 1 becomes a hub for TV enthusiasts to celebrate the finer points of the tube - a place to indulge your love of the small screen.
The 'Live in the Studio' series presents industry experts and luminaries, academics, aficionados and pop-culture sovereigns for a series of live talks, screenings and performances that revel in TV past and present.
Thu 27 May 2010, 7pm Mad Men, Mad Women with Sian Prior Unclassified 15+
"What you call love was invented by guys to sell nylons" - Don Draper, Mad Men
Mad Men ties into our love of all things retro; it's a flashback to an era of economic boom, exquisite clothes and excessive living. But beneath the luxury lie uncomfortable questions about race, gender, prejudice, and social inequality, and a sense that these people are not just characters of some hazy past but the world we live in now.
Join a panel of TV and advertising gurus, Debi Enker (TV Critic), Mark Nicholls (Senior Lecturer in Cinema Studies at the University of Melbourne) and chair Sian Prior (writer and broadcaster) as they traverse the Mad Men and Mad Women, the ads, the history and the splendour of this television masterpiece.
Thu 3 June 2010, 7pm Gossip Girl Here with Dr. Saige Walton Unclassified 15+
"Your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite" - Gossip Girl
Spotted: Dr Saige Walton (University of Melbourne), Mel Campbell (freelance journalist and editor) and Radha O'Meara (University of Melbourne) on an all-girl panel having a heart-to-heart about teen dramas on the small screen. And who do they have their sights set on? Josh Schwartz, the producer and writer responsible for Chuck and Gossip Girl, and who, at 26, became the youngest person in network history to create a network series with The O.C.
