about the memory grid space

The Memory Grid exhibition zone utilises a number of different display devices in order to explore notions of public and private viewing and to act as windows to the programs going on in other production spaces.

In addition to single screen projections and a number of plasma screen displays, the memory grid features the following specialised display formats:

Memory Grid 'Pods'
Five custom built lounges featuring 42" plasma and LCD touch screen, optional speaker/headphone delivered audio
The Memory Grid 'Pods' were designed and built for the Memory Grid by Melbourne industrial designers CROWD productions (http://www.crowd.com.au/). Each pod has room to seat up to 5 people and features an interactive LCD touch screen that allows visitors to select video on demand from the Memory Grid's programs, or to interact with Memory Grid projects. Once selected, works are viewed on the 42" plasma screens mounted in the pods.

Each of the Memory Grid 'Pods' has the ability to incorporate a video camera, a shotgun capsule microphone and the recording capability for mini-production experiences within the pod.

KALEIDO multi-image display device
The Kaleido multi-image display device projects onto the large area at the right-hand entrance to the Memory Grid. A specialised piece of broadcast technology, the Kaleido is utilised by the Memory Grid as a dynamic and responsive way to present group works and to enable live narrowcast of our production programs in other spaces.

Kaleido has the ability to simultaneously project 9 video streams (with a single audio channel) in any arrangement of non-overlapping windows making it perfect for the display of group projects. In addition to these 9 video feeds, the Kaleido can display the streams from 2 live cameras in the Digital Studio, and up to 4 live feeds from the Screen Pit cameras or control room. The Kaleido is capable of displaying all of these 15 video streams simultaneously.

On this screen you are able to see works from the Memory Grid collections, previews of upcoming programs, information about Public Programs at ACMI, special commissioned projects, and live activities from the production studio spaces. Submissions are invited from groups wishing to produce work specifically for this display.

Three Interactive stations for display of works from the Interactive collection
LCD monitors, Headphones, Keyboard, Mouse
Interactive works created by students or community groups on CD-Rom or DVD, and CD-Rom/DVD captured websites, are presented on these stations as part of a rotating program.
