Alone (Solas)
Directed by Benito Zambrano, Alone has become a contemporary classic and is one of the most honest and moving dramas in modern Spanish cinema.

María (Ana Fernández) is an intelligent woman without a formal education who escapes her tyrannical father and an impoverished upbringing in a small town. But her life in the big city is marred by mundane jobs, alcoholism, abusive relationships and loneliness.

When her devoted mother Rosa (María Galiana) moves in to be near Maria's father in hospital, her hope for happiness is unexpectedly restored.

Zambrano achieves an almost unprecedented level of filmic sobriety and sincerity, enabling him to impart onto his female characters the dignity they deserve.

Selected by Pedro Almodóvar.
