The Lucky Star (La buena estrella)
The Lucky Star (La buena estrella)
Directed by cult filmmaker, the late Ricardo Franco, The Lucky Star is based on a true story about a poignant love triangle.

Rafael (Antonio Resines), a good-hearted man whose genitalia was amputated after an accident, rescues Marina (Maribel Verdú), a half-blind prostitute, from an attacker.

They begin a sentimental relationship that intensifies when petty criminal Daniel (Jordi Mollà), Marina's attacker and father of her daughter, is released from prison and begins harassing the couple.

Franco crafts an intense and intimately pessimistic drama in which the three (physically and metaphorically) crippled characters struggle to escape their tortured pasts and find hope in a world that seems bent on preventing it.

Selected by Pedro Almodóvar.
