Rowing With the Wind (Remando al viento)

Directed by the acclaimed Gonzalo Suárez, this Spanish cult classic recreates one of the most mythical moments in literature.

The film constructs a quasi-horror, highly-stylised fiction around the true-life encounter between Romantic poet Lord Byron and the Shelleys - Mary and Percy Bysshe - in Europe in 1816 and the tragic events that befell them.

The bet that leads Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein triggers a series of incidents culminating in a tragic and historically true end for the writers and their families.

Splendidly written and featuring luxuriant cinematography, the film stars an admirable international cast including atypical performances by a young Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley.

Selected by Pedro Almodóvar.

Winner of 6 Awards including Best Film - Fotogramas de Plata 1989
Winner of 4 Goya Awards, 1989
