Slaves of New York
Slaves of New York
New York was arguably the centre of the creative world in the 1980s. You might have bumped into Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat or hat designer, Eleanor. Well, maybe not. But you can see her in this classic slice of New York artistic life when Marc Jacobs was also finding his feet as a fashion designer.

Director James Ivory (Room with a View) swaps crinolines for shoulder pads and big hair in this film based on a series of short stories by Tama Janowitz, with Bernadette Peters starring as the struggling hat designer Eleanor.

Among the many highlights of the film is a fashion parade where Eleanor's creations are matched brilliantly with an actual Stephen Sprouse fashion parade (one of Marc Jacobs' biggest influences) with the role of Stephen played pitch perfect by Steve Buscemi.

Also stars Chris Sarandon, Mary Beth Hurt, Anthony LaPaglia and Stanley Tucci.
