ACMI has commissioned this playful new interactive work to mark the 150th anniversary of the Eight Hour Day in Victoria.
2006 marks the 150th anniversary of the Eight Hour Day in Victoria. Action taken by stonemasons on 21 April 1856 led to the establishment and maintenance of the Eight Hour Day, recognised internationally as a world first. As part of the anniversary celebrations, ACMI invited Victorian artists to submit proposals for an artwork that would engage with the struggle to achieve a work-life balance.
The successful submission, Monkey Bear Robot by Toby Burke and Al MacInnes, is an interactive animation featuring three characters who represent play, rest and work. By using footpads, players can drive these characters to extremes of behaviour, or with some clever footwork achieve the perfect balance between them. Al MacInnes' animations have screened internationally, and his sound-design has won several ATOM awards and been represented at Milia. Toby Burke is a musician and Emmy-nominated writer.
Monkey Bear Robot is part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Eight Hour Day and is supported by Arts Victoria.
