Bye bye Burton

Crowds at the Burton exhibition's final weekend
Crowds at the Burton exhibition's final weekend
As the Batmobile speeds off into the sunset, we farewell our most successful exhibition yet.

ACMI's blockbuster Melbourne Winter Masterpieces show Tim Burton: The Exhibition closed on Sunday evening delivering a record attendance figure of 275,770 visitors over 109 days on show.

Amid the last-minute rush to see the show were queues of punters jostling to see the exhibition for the first time, as well as enthusiastic Burton fans looking to get their last fix of the exclusive-to-Melbourne exhibition extravaganza.

Adding a new dimension to the weekend's activities, ACMI stayed open until midnight from Thursday to Saturday for special editions of the popular Burton Club and, with a promising line-up live entertainment, fans enjoyed a night to remember.

Saturday delivered 6549 visitors alone - setting a new record for the highest daily attendance at ACMI.

In addition to the exhibition, visitors enjoyed public events galore with 36,000 people flocking to 244 public programs over the four month program of exhibition tours, talks and lectures, workshops, kids activities, screenings and live events.

Additionally, the Tim Burton Education Program saw 13,000 students during Term 3.

Of course there have been many experiences that can't be quantified, such as the enjoyment of visitors participating in the Activity Space then exhibiting their own characters on the walls of the gallery, or discovering Tim Burton's penchant for Polaroids the in free add-on exhibition in Gallery 2.

After two reprints of the exhibition catalogue, the ACMI Store has now sold out.

The exhibition de-installation began immediately, as it is due to open in Toronto at the new tiff Bell Lightbox centre on 26 November, 2010.

And while our city (temporarily renamed 'MelBurton') will miss the hysteria of Mr Burton's visit, punters having their photo taken with the iconic Batmobile, and the gothic fashions parading about the gallery, we've more to come.

ACMI now turns its attention to its next major exhibition Dreams Come True: The Art of Disney's Classic Fairy Tales, opening on 18 November and running until 25 April 2010.

So if you left Burton to the last minute, don't make the same mistake with Dreams Come True - tickets are now on sale via the ACMI website.
