A zombie named Colin
Alastair Kirton stars as Colin the zombie
It's a brainsfest at ACMI as we brave the latest craze in cult films.
There is not a ghoul more popular right now than the zombie.
Shuffle along to ACMI this Friday for a screening of low budget zombie cult-hit, Colin (2008), followed by a phone Q&A with Director Marc Price, moderated by Triple R's Richard Watts (known to transform for the annual Melbourne Zombie Shuffle).
The UK filmmaker began shooting his micro-budget feature debut on a mini-DV camcorder and has produced a strikingly effective, darkly humorous and surprisingly affecting zombie social drama with an end-of-days vibe. Scant resources notwithstanding, Price mobilised a talented can-do cast and crew - key among these is actor Alastair Kirton as the inconspicuously named title character.
With rave reviews putting the film on par with George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and a swag of awards from film festivals all over the globe, this film is definitely one for zombiephiles. The aspiring undead may even want to take note of make up artist Michelle Webb's (X-Men 3, The Book of Eli) work in preparation for their own transformation.
March sees more zombie screen mayhem at ACMI with 2009 French arthouse thriller, La Horde (Friday 4 March), in which rogue cops and gangs are required to join forces to survive when an unexpected zombie outbreak threatens Paris.
For those not yet squeamish enough, feast on the 2009 hit Zombies of Mass Destruction (Fri 11 March). Dubbed a 'zomedy', this gore-riddled satire has post-9/11 and socially conservative politics firmly in its sights. Zombies graphically dispatch the town's residents when they're infected by a virus attributed to Arab terrorists.
Colin (with Q&A) screens this Friday at 9.30pm as part of ACMI's ongoing Freaky Friday's program. It will also have an encore screening (Fri 25 Feb, no Q&A). You can also get your freak on with La Horde (Friday 4 March) and Zombies of Mass Destruction (Fri 11 March).
