Get your skate on with one of these free workshops designed for a younger crowd.
To coincide with Shaun Gladwell: Stereo Sequences, we're hosting a series of casual workshops for teenagers that will explore the creative potential of urban subcultures, helping younger adults to connect with Shaun's work.
The Intermix: Shaun Gladwell Sessions will look at how skating and DJing intersect with filmmaking and video art, and encourage young adults to see their play as a pathway to artistic expression.
The first Intermix session on Friday 22 July will feature a screening of Skateistan: to Live and Skate Kabul, a short doco about a skate school in war-torn Afghanistan, followed by audio/video scratching workshop with ARIA Award-winning DJ Wasabi.
On Saturday 23 July, The Intermix turns DIY film school with Short and Swede, a video workshop where teens can remake their favourite movies a là Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind.
The final Gladwell-inspired intermix session on Friday 5 August will include a screening of Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001), the classic documentary about the birth of freestyle skateboarding, followed by an audio/video scratching workshop with DJ Flagrant, who has supported Snoop Dogg, Black Eyed Peas and Kanye West, amongst others, and was one of the first Australian DJs to take up video turntablism.
The Intermix: Shaun Gladwell Sessions are suitable for 13-20 year olds, with pizza and snacks provided at each event. The sessions are free, but there is limited capacity, so make sure you register by emailing intermix@acmi.net.au. Word.
