Learn from a NASA Astronaut
Rex Walheim
Victorian students are set to learn about space travel from astronaut Rex Walheim.
Astronaut Rex Walheim will visit ACMI next week and host a special education program for Victorian schools. Blast Off with NASA Astronaut Rex Walheim will be held on Thursday 22 September from noon.
ACMI's Studio 1 will become a classroom with a difference for a live audience of 50 students and the event will also be beamed to Victorian schools via the Department of Education's online Virtual Conference Centre (VCC).
As well as being broadcast directly into schools, visitors to Federation Square will be able to experience the hour-long event live on the big screen. Scienceworks will play host to Spotswood Primary School students who will watch the event live, while students at the Royal Children's Hospital will also tune in.
Rex will talk about real life as an astronaut but there will also be a healthy dose of fiction incorporated into the event with the students in attendance encouraged to participate in their own trip to outer space with a little help from green screen technology.
Each school can register for one virtual seat in the VCC and registered schools will be able to submit their students' top three questions for Rex - with the best ones put to the astronaut to answer. To register a class and/or school to view this event through the VCC, complete this registration form.
Participants can also take part in an online discussion during the event by using the hash tag #AstroRex in their tweets.
This one-off education event has been scheduled to coincide with the launch of ACMIs new exhibition Star Voyager: Exploring Space on Screen, which will also feature an ongoing education program for primary and secondary students.
Blast Off with NASA Astronaut Rex Walheim is on Thursday 22 September from noon to 1pm.
