Time to change your 'toon

If you're still blaming the demise of the Scooby-Doo TV series on the introduction of Scrappy-Doo, we think it might be time you moved on. To help you get over your grudge, the folk at the Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF) have packed over 400 of the best new and classic films from over 30 countries into a mere 8 days. Phew! These guys don't muck around.

We can't wait for the screening of Estonian animator Mati Kütt's Sky Song, an astounding experimental piece using different forms and materials to tell a story about a postman delivering a package to the moon.

Those of you who are visually challenged will love the UPA Retrospective program, including a session of films featuring Mister Magoo, that loveable old curmudgeon voiced by Jim Backus who played Thurston Howell, III on Gilligan's Island.

'Focus on Poland' showcases the work of contemporary Polish animators, while 'New York Who's Who' is spreading the news on who's hot right now in the Big Apple.

Plus, MIAF regulars will be stoked to know all the popular programs are back, including the 'Best of the Next' sessions and the 'International Program'.

And then there's our own personal favourite, 'Late Night Bizarre'; this year MIAF promises "insane prison inmates", "robust insect loving" and "bad nuns" amongst other intriguing subjects - yowser!

The Melbourne International Animation Festival runs from Sunday 19 June to Sunday 26 June. While you're here, don't forget to drop into the Festival Club at The Cube - with special events, food and drinks to purchase and plenty of 'toon talk, it's the place to be.
