Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?

Peter and the Wolf
Peter and the Wolf

Peter certainly isn't.

Peter and the Wolf is an enchanting tale about a curious boy who lives with his grumpy grandfather in a forest filled with menacing wolves. Throw in a bird that can't fly, a friendly duck and some tenacious hunters and you've got all the elements needed for a classic children's story.

While the tale may sound familiar, what you might not know is that Peter and the Wolf was one of the earliest introductions to classical music for many children. The original version of Peter and the Wolf was written as a composition with music and text by child prodigy Sergei Prokofiev in 1936, with each character assigned an instrument to represent its voice and movement.

Over the years there have been many interpretations of this classic story and these school holidays we will be screening the latest (and arguably the greatest) version in the form of Suzie Templeton's stunning stop-motion animated adaptation. Screenings of her BAFTA and Academy Award® winning film will be accompanied by a live performance from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, giving audiences the chance to enjoy the story just as Prokofiev intended. It promises to enchant the young, as well as the young-at-heart, and convert another generation to the wonders of classical music.

Peter and the Wolf is presented in conjunction with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from Tue 4 Oct - Thu 6 Oct.
