A cultural feast

Waris Jari Hantu
ACMI welcomes back the Australian Malaysian Film Festival
Sure, the 2008 Olympic Games are almost upon us, but who cares when the Window Washing Olympics are in town! In Hans Issac's Cuci, four brothers compete in the alternative Olympics to win the window washing contract for the KLCC Building, Kuala Lumpur's famous skyscraper. It's one of the diverse films screening in this year's Australian Malaysian Film Festival. Kabir Bhatia's Sepi, the festival opener, is an exploration of love, loss and solitude, while A. Razak Mohaideen's Duyung is a fantasy comedy about a kind-hearted young man from a small village who befriends a mermaid (think Splash set in Sabah). Ahmad Idham's Congkak has been labelled as Malaysia's scariest horror movie this year, and Suhaimi Baba's Waris Jari Hantu mixes drama, folklore and mystery in its tale of conflict between self discovery and destiny. While you're here, drop into the Festival Club, where you'll find a free exhibition of Malaysian batik design and fashion, and book your tickets now for the opening night gala filled with music, dance, special guests and scrumptious food!
