What should videogames be? What could they be? Each year the Independent Games Festival (IGF) showcases indie games from around the world that attempt to answer these questions.
The IGF is part of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and is dedicated to celebrating the work and creativity of independent developers. The main competition offers awards for Excellence in Audio, Visual Art, Design, Technical Excellence and The Seumas McNally Grand Prize for the most outstanding game.
In 2009, a new award was created for abstract, shortform and unconventional game development that advances the medium and the way we think about games. This category explicitly demonstrates what has always been the great strength of the IGF - commitment to innovation, experimentation and the ability to challenge perceptions about what videogames are and can be.
The games on display in the Best of the Independent Games Festival 2009 exhibition are a selection of winners and finalists from the IGF competition and offer a taste of the possibilities of games as an expressive medium. Highlights include grand prize winner Blueberry Garden, a curious and charming platformer where players are invited to find their way around the game's ecosystem; the synaesthesia-inducing pattern, colour and audio of Brainpipe; and the gorgeous hand-drawn art of Machinarium, a point-and-click puzzle adventure.
The Best of the Independent Games Festival 2009 is open daily at ACMI from 10am to 6pm until Sunday 14 February.
