john waters please stand up
This Filthy World
ACMI Cinemas is very excited to be presenting the Australian Premiere of the new John Waters stand-up comedy film This Filthy World. The film will screen on Friday 7 & 14 September as part of Freaky Fridays - ACMI's weekly late night cult cinema program.
Kitschy, campy, hilarious but regularly pushing the boundaries of propriety, good taste and censorship, Waters practically invented the late night / cult cinema slot through films such as Pink Flamingos, Cecil B. Demented and Hairspray.
A call to arms for filth followers everywhere, This Filthy World features Waters in his rarely seen stand-up mode, leading the audience through his extraordinary career - from 1964's Hag in a Black Leather Jacket to A Dirty Shame some forty years later - with endlessly raucous anecdotes about the freaks, celebrities and freak celebrities who have crossed his path.
"Those who think of the director John Waters only as a sicko, a wacko, a pervert, a psycho, a multi-fetishist, a deviant, a menace and/or a nut job will be surprised to discover, through This Filthy World, that he would also make an excellent dinner-party guest. True, the other guests would need to have a tolerance for stories about singing rectums, but still, the guy is a raconteur of the first order." The New York Times
Much of Waters' material was created for the show, so Waters maniacs - those of you who have read every book and seen every TV appearance - are in for a treat. This Filthy World is directed by Jeff Garlin, who has serious comedy cred in his own right as cast member and the executive producer of the Larry David's comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm (he plays Larry's agent, Jeff Greene). Jeff has directed both Jon Stewart and Denis Leary in their HBO specials. He's also made appearances in The Daily Show, Arrested Development, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Baywatch (a career highlight?) and will also be one of the voices in Pixar's next feature, Wall-E, due out in 2008.
After hugely successful screenings at Edinburgh Film Festival, Toronto Film festival and the Berlin Film Festival, your one window to catch This Filthy World on the big screen in Melbourne will be at ACMI Cinemas.
