Ari Gold in Adventures of Power

You've met Napoleon Dynamite, Lily and Jarrod in Eagle versus Shark, Jemaine and Bret in Flight of the Concords. It's time you met Power.

He's the newest cringe-worthy loveable musical nerd - no, not the character from Entourage - but not too far removed from him either.

This Friday as part of ACMI's late night Freaky Friday sessions, we are premiering Adventures of Power - the story of an eccentric outcast, a warm-hearted, hopeless mine worker - and air-drumming champion of New Mexico.

For Power (played by Ari Gold) it's all about air-drumming, and like all cult-worthy outcasts, he is stuck in a small town where no one understands him (well, there's always the one who does, but we don't meet her until later).

Power's love interest is played by actress Shoshannah Stern. Meet Annie, a deaf girl who finally "hears" the music when she watches Power air-drum. Born into a fourth generation deaf family, Stern's first language was American Sign Language. She is famous for her role in Weeds, and she's gold in this new flick. See Adventures of Power for no other reason than to simply watch the love scene between Annie and Power in the kitchen.

Writer, Director and lead Ari Gold was named one of Filmmaker Magazine's '25 Faces to Watch' after having unprecedented success with three short films screening at Sundance three years in a row. Gold's short Helicopter (2000) received accolades around the international film festival circuit, and now fans of good nerd comedy can brace themselves for the Australian Premiere of Gold's award-winning feature film debut.

Those lucky enough to be in Brisbane and Sydney over New Years may have seen or heard about The Honey Brothers playing in town. The Honey Brothers are Ari Gold, Adrian Grenier (yes, from Entourage - if you think there is a theme emerging here, consider that yes, there is a character called Ari Gold in Entourage - but no, again, it definitely isn't based on this Ari). The Honey Brothers also feature Ari's twin brother Ethan Gold, Andrew Vladeck and D.S Posner.

If you missed the band, never mind. Screening twice at ACMI, Adventures of Power is sure to rock da house down south. Ethan Gold wrote the entire soundtrack for the film which includes mostly original songs; from nu-country ballads to thrash-metal, 70's rock to North-African pop. The music is good. It's real good.

Adventures of Power screens as part of the Freaky Fridays program on Friday 16 January and Friday 23 January at 10pm. For all the screening details click here
