game over
Super Mario has left the building
ACMI has set a new world record for attendance at its international winter blockbuster exhibition Game On, breaking the previous figure held by Chicago's Science and Industry Museum.
The playable history of videogames, curated by the London Barbican and exclusively brought to Australian audiences by ACMI, closed Sunday 13 July with record numbers of Melburnians also flocking to the related talks, curator tours and education programs.
During its four month Australian run at ACMI, Game On attracted a world record 129,372 audience, outperforming its run in Chicago - a city three times the size of Melbourne.
But, as the Herald Sun said, "all great things must come to an end... and so it is with Game On"(10/07/08).
The arcade relics are already being packed away to make way for ACMI's next major exhibition, the visual arts and cinema-focused Correspondences: Victor Erice & Abbas Kiarostami.
Exploring the work of two filmmakers, Iranian Abbas Kiarostami and Spaniard Victor Erice, the exhibition demonstrates the shared humanity, humour, and artistic practice of the two directors through a collection of film, video, photography and painting.
Correspondences: Victor Erice & Abbas Kiarostami opens Thursday 21 August 2008.
