Glory to the Filmmaker!
Direct from the Venice and Toronto film festivals, Takeshi Kitano's gloriously off the wall spoof Glory to the Filmmaker! stars in Freaky Fridays at ACMI.
Playing the role of himself in the film, the director is faced with the challenge of producing a box office hit after publicly announcing his decision to stop making gangster movies.
In an attempt to create a commercial masterpiece, Kitano dabbles with multiple formulaic genres: pitching ideas from a J horror remake and a ninja epic to a sci-fi extravaganza and minimalist drama to unconvinced producers who'd prefer the director make another yakuza flick.
This latest work from the Japanese cinematic mastermind Kitano led the Venice Film Festival to create a new award for career achievement and innovation, named the Glory to the Filmmaker! Award, and at the 2007 festival, the first recipient was Takeshi Kitano.
