ten years tackling issues of identity

Alex Dimitriades in Head On

Celebrate ten years of the Australian cinema landmark Head On with a screening and Q&A with star Alex Dimitriades and writer-director Ana Kokkinos.

When we realised that this year marked the 10th anniversary of one of Australia's cinematic landmarks, we weren't going to let it slip by without causing a little bit of a fuss. So we invited the film's star, Alex Dimitriades, and writer-director, Ana Kokkinos, to ACMI to celebrate Head On's milestone with fans and first-timers.

This weekend, at the Australian Perspectives screening of Head On, Dimitriades and Kokkinos will take part in a post-screening Q&A about the breakthrough film. Revered for its gritty and uncompromising look at personal and cultural identity, it confirmed Dimitriades as one of this country's finest actors and Ana Kokkinos as a highly original filmmaking talent.

Taking on the role of 19-year-old Ari quite early in his career, Dimitriades was breaking new ground in this graphic day-in-the-life film about a young man who confronts both his sexuality and his Greek heritage. The result was ultimately one of the bravest and most compelling performances ever seen in Australian film, winning him an AFI nomination.

Just as extraordinary was that Head On was Ana Kokkinos' first feature film. At this time, such a debut was unparalleled. Kokkinos has since gone on to make films such as The Book of Revelation and direct episodes of the award-winning TV series The Secret Life of Us.
