through somebody's eyes
Rapture (Arrebato) Ivan Zulueta, 1980
Co-programmed by Pedro Almodóvar, La Mirada is back with a feast of new and classic films from Spain and Argentina.
"I know that I am fortunate in that my films are seen in Australia but there are many extraordinary filmmakers both from previous and current generations who remain to be discovered," said Pedro Almodóvar on his involvement in last year's La Mirada Film Festival. "I strongly believe that through La Mirada we will open a window for these artists' work to be viewed".
The Spanish auteur is not leaving this to chance, once again curating a special program of rarely-seen films for the 2009 festival. His selection includes Bigas Luna's cult classic Bilbao and Ivan Zulueta's Rapture, a masterpiece of underground cinema from the 1980s.
As a special treat, two of cinema's much-loved personalities, Woody Allen and Penélope Cruz (hot off the heels of her Oscar win for her performance in Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona) have chosen their favourite Spanish films especially for this festival. And this year, a program called La Mirada Argentina showcases the best of new Argentinean cinema.
The festival will not only be a feast of film - the opening night screening of Juan Taratuto's hilarious 2008 romantic comedy A Boyfriend for My Wife will be followed by a fiesta with fine Spanish food, live music by Tangazo and a selection of Spanish wines. Then, join us throughout the festival at the La Mirada Lounge, next door to ACMI at Beer Deluxe, featuring a menu designed by award-winning chef Abel Martin.
There will also be some great opportunities to meet the brightest talents in Spanish and Argentinean cinema, including Oscar-nominated director Javier Fésser who will talk about his feature film Camino and his short works, and actress Verónica Echegui, winner of the Shooting Star Award at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival.
La Mirada will be at ACMI from Thursday 2 April through to Sunday 12 April. Full program information and tickets will be available soon. To check out more highlights click here, or visit http://www.lamirada.org.au/ closer to the festival. ¡Buen apetito!
