What do Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Paul Auster, Stephen Daldry and Penélope Cruz all have in common?

Apart from being exceptionally talented, they have all been special guest curators of the La Mirada Film Festival, an annual feast of cinema showcasing the best from Spain and Latin America.

This year's line-up of guest curators is just as impressive and diverse. Acclaimed directors Ang Lee and Ken Loach have each selected their favourite Spanish or Latin American films, both of which will be revealed on the night of the screenings.

Consistent with his own offbeat vision, award-winning Producer/Writer/Director Guillermo Del Toro's selection features three classics of Mexican horror, including El Barón del Terror or, more simply put, Brainiac.

Antonio Banderas will present one of his favourites in Luis García Berlanga's Welcome Mr. Marshall, a film also selected by the esteemed Pedro Almodóvar who returns to La Mirada with another selection of rare and important cinematic gems.

Name dropping aside, the 2011 La Mirada Film Festival will again challenge, entice and entertain, with the popular Spanish Cuisine and Film program and the many Australian premieres of flicks you might not get to see anywhere else. Be sure to catch Spain's official 2010 Academy Awards entry, Even the Rain and Agustí Villaronga's Black Bread, which scooped the pool at the 2011 Goya Awards.

With a Mexican fiesta and huge opening and closing night galas, what more encouragement do you need to come along? ¡Ándale, ándale!

La Mirada Film Festival screens at ACMI from 14 - 26 April 2011.
