Attack of the mini minors

The Brunswick Browns
The Brunswick Browns
Kids culture takes ACMI by storm.

Mo Willems is the author and illustrator of a bunch of rather brilliant children's books. He wrote Knuffle Bunny; a Cautionary Tale, Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed and the award-winning Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, in which a crafty pigeon tries to convince you to let him drive a bus. "What's the big deal? It's just a bus!" he says, and then, "I have dreams, you know." It's pretty funny.

Someone once asked Mo why he chose a pigeon to be the star of his books and he replied, "A hippopotamus wouldn't fit on the page." That's how it goes in the land of kiddie culture, see: life is whimsical, tangential and occasionally non-sequitur. Kids like pigeon avatars and poo jokes, and their sense of joy is always lurking somewhere very close to the surface. It's a lovely way of seeing the world, and a nice thing to immerse yourself in from time to time.

This weekend at ACMI is the perfect time, in fact, as Little Big Shots returns for its sixth year. As Australia's only festival of films made for and by children, Little Big Shots captures the weird, the funny, the challenging and the charming universe that young people inhabit. Obviously, it's an ideal outing for families, babysitters and little dudes on a play date, but we'd like to invite all you kids-at-heart to come along too.

The 2010 festival features nine packages of short films that are grouped by age-appropriate content, including a film adaptation of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus for tiny tots, a phenomenal Australian animation called Tin Can Heart for mid-sized minors and a few live action films for slightly older kids such as Aeroplane Dreaming and Ralph, directed by Deborah Mailman.

Returning again in 2010 is the fantastic Kids on Screen program, which showcases films from the world's youngest emerging directors. Is Ollie Ivin-Poole from Brunswick the next Martin Scorsese? Get your little butt to Little Big Shots to find out!
