Everybody's talkin'
Len Lye
Hear that? It's the soft hum of people talking about the genius of Len Lye.
Despite Melbourne's abundance of art, be it indie or established, housed at artist-run initiatives or the NGV, Len Lye is making his mark on Australian critics and public alike.
For those who haven't already heard, ACMI is hosting the most comprehensive exhibition of the New Zealand artist's oeuvre to date. This unforgettable survey of Lye's work across film, sculpture, painting, photography and poetry is a fantastic starting point to appreciating how influential and forward thinking Lye was.
Some of the critics raving are Sydney-based journalist Lyndon Barber, who calls the exhibition "terrific - mandatory viewing for anyone in Melbourne" on his blog Eyes Wired Open; Gary Anderson writes on Artshub, "an outstanding, eye-opening exhibition. Fine art and film students (and the odd musical and literary type) are flocking to the Lye show"; RealTime's Danni Zuvela says "the careful placement at the start of the viewer's journey indicates the thoughtfulness that has gone into the curation of this show, and the visitor's consequently rich experience."
"The sculptures are best described as deceptively simple feats of engineering that wobble, bounce, dart, spin, flit, collide, touch and/or knock at various intervals, and are best experienced in person," Lyndon Horsburgh tells street press readers in Beat.
The Herald Sun's Alison Barclay writes that "art that twists, dances and jives is sure to enthral Fed Square visitors".
But perhaps the most solid and reliable source is the man himself who has been trying to tell us since last century, "My art will be pretty good, I think, for the 21st century."
Kids, adults and art boffins are all getting more out of ACMI's homage to Len Lye than expected. So get down to Gallery 1 before Sunday October 11, 2009 and check it out for yourself.
