Behind the curtain, the wizard revealed
Len Lye
ACMI set to open the doors on the highly anticipated Len Lye exhibition.
Take a trip 'inside the head' of Len Lye (1901-1980) - one of the most remarkable 20th-Century Modern Artists.
In Melbourne for the grand opening this week are many passionate people keen to share their insights into this extraordinary man and his work through a series of free talks and workshops.
Roger Horrocks worked as Lye's assistant in New York during the last year of his life and published the only biography to be written on him: Len Lye (2001).
In a special presentation on Thursday 16 July at 6pm, Roger will explore the world of the artist whose primary interest was "the mystery of motion", and will screen the Australian Premiere of his own 18 minute film, Art That Moves - The World of Len Lye (2009).
Shot by Leon Narbey (Whale Rider, Dean Spanley) and produced by his wife Shirley Horrocks (A Flip and Two Twisters), the film starts in the 1910s with Lye as a teenager having his 'Eureka!' moment that movement could be the basis for a new kind of art.
Through a series of dramatised scenes, the film tracks the development of Lye's thinking and ends with his film compositions and kinetic sculptures. As Horrocks says, "Kinetic art is a rather loose category, but Lye made something very original and coherent out of it, both in films and in sculpture."
On Friday, come back for more at 11am for a special walk through the gallery with the exhibition curators.
Alessio Cavallaro (Senior Curator, ACMI) and Tyler Cann (Curator, Len Lye Collection) will provide an in-depth tour of the exhibition filled with the behind-the-scenes insights - you won't be able to look at the sculptures in the same way afterwards.
Don't wait Dorothy, because these opportunities to go behind the curtain and find out more about the great wizard won't come around again.
