masala and lights spice up the square
Masala
Srinivas Krishna, director of the internationally acclaimed film Masala, comes to Melbourne this winter to shed some light on his films - and on Federation Square.
Krishna is visiting Melbourne for the world premiere of his installation When The Gods Came Down To Earth for The Light in Winter event at Federation Square, directed by Robyn Archer.
To coincide with this premiere, ACMI will present a special screening of Krishna's groundbreaking, genre-bending 1991 film. Voted as one of the Top Ten South Asian Films in a British Film Institute poll, Masala begins five years after Krishna's parents perished in the Air India bombing.
Street-smart outcast Krishna (played by the director himself), battling his demons, succumbs to a life of crime. Drawn into the antics of his extended family, Krishna trys to make sense of his life as an Indian migrant in Canada.
Saeed Jaffrey (My Beautiful Laundrette) plays three different roles in this heady mix of biting realism, Bollywood escapism and erotic fantasy.
Krishna was only 26 years old when he wrote, directed and starred in this work. He is credited with providing a rare snapshot into the lives of Indian migrants in a politically-correct 1990s Canada.
The screening will be followed by a unique opportunity to attend a Q&A with the director himself.
