Midsumma days and nights
Newcastle
Midsumma is getting set to take over ACMI (and Melbourne), presenting three unique films.
As part of our regular Kids' Flicks and Australian Perspectives programs, Midsumma will present three films showcasing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) experience.
First up, Kids' Flicks get superific with a screening of Dottie's Magic Pockets (2008), the first kids' show to feature gay and lesbian families. It's filled with catchy songs, cute cartoons - like the purplish-pink princess and her two dads - and Dottie's fabulous puppet friends James the Flower, Uncanny the Singing Can, Motilda the Mouse and more.
Australian Perspectives heads back to the beach with Newcastle (2008), a coming-of-age drama set in the NSW industrial city. Jesse is seventeen and not interested in much else besides surfing. His younger brother Fergus follows an alternative path, having recently embraced his homosexuality. Newcastle's storyline of adolescent angst, sibling rivalry and family tragedy is both touching and life-affirming.
After the beach its time to take to the dance floor with two free screenings of Tango with a Twist (2008), which charts the transformative journey of four gays and lesbians as they dance their way towards self-discovery on a whirlwind tango tour that takes them from Sydney to Buenos Aires, Argentina and back.
