The word is out

Little Ashes
Little Ashes
Australia's biggest and best queer film festival is back.

Born James Lawrence Slattery, transsexual Candy Darling had more than fifteen minutes of fame when she became one of Andy Warhol's Superstars, acted alongside Jane Fonda and Sophia Loren, and was immortalised in Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side'.

In his documentary about Candy, Beautiful Darling, director James Resin combines rare footage and interviews with the likes of Fran Lebowitz, Paul Morrissey and John Waters. It's a fascinating glimpse into the cultural milieu of the sixities, and an intimate portrait of a queer icon.

It is just one of the gems screening in this year's Melbourne Queer Film Festival, now celebrating its 20th amazing year.

Also screening is Pablo Trapero's Lion's Den (Leonera), a gripping and claustrophobic Argentinean drama that premiered at Cannes and Kareem Mortimer's acclaimed drama Children of God, exploring the widespread homophobia that plagues the seemingly idyllic paradise of the Bahamas.

Twilight nuts will get a kick out of seeing Robert Pattinson play Salvador Dalí opposite Javier Beltrán's Federico García Lorca in Little Ashes, while Richard Laxton's An Englishman in New York sees John Hurt reprise his role as writer Quentin Crisp (after his breakthrough performance in The Naked Civil Servant).

The 20th Melbourne Queer Film Festival begins tonight and ends on Sunday 28 March. For details click here
