As part of our Melbourne International Film Festival co-presentation Focus On Ozploitation, ACMI is hosting a free panel discussion about Australian 'Ozploitation' cinema of the 70s and 80s.

The filmmaking phenomena known as Ozploitation is about to be thrust into the spotlight. It's the forgotten era of Aussie cinema, when schlock horror, ocker comedy, break-neck action and frisky sex romps were the way to an audience.

Our panel will scratch below the surface of these genre films and uncover the gritty truths about Australia's film history and our most innovative, maverick film makers.

Mark Hartley, whose about-to-be-released feature-length documentary Not Quite Hollywood - equally honouring and exposing the era - is the perfect Chair for our panel.

Joining him will be acclaimed director Brian Trenchard-Smith, lauded by Quentin Tarantino as one of the best genre film makers, who lays credit to Turkey Shoot and Dead End Drive-In, BMX Bandits, The Man From Hong Kong and Kung Fu Killers.

Also joining the panel will be Everett DeRoche, arguably the single most successful Australian screenwriter of the era (Long Weekend, Roadgames, Razorback and the international hit Patrick). As Tarantino has also said, "almost everything Everett DeRoche wrote is one of my favourite films".

Other illustrious panelists include Tony Ginnane (producer Turkey Shoot, Patrick and Fantasm); Richard Brennan (producer Long Weekend, Deathcheaters and Mad Dog Morgan); and David Hannay (co-producer of Kung Fu Killers, and executive producer of Stone and The Man From Hong Kong).

The event will also feature classic Ozploitation film excerpts.

The free Focus on Ozploitation panel discussion is at ACMI Cinemas, Sat 26 Jul from 2pm.
