how to live happily ever after
Amy Adams in 'Enchanted'
Wicked witches, fairy princesses and the Big, Bad Wolf are special guests at ACMI these school holidays.
In Kevin Lima's Enchanted, Amy Adams plays Giselle, a fairytale heroine living in an animated world who dreams of marrying Prince Edward (James Marsden), her one true love (or so she thinks). But Edward's evil step mother Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) is determined to stop the marriage for fear of losing her throne, and banishes Giselle to hell (well, the real life concrete jungle of New York City anyway). Penniless and lost, Giselle is 'rescued' by cynical divorce lawyer and single dad Robert (Patrick Dempsey from Grey's Anatomy) and his daughter Morgan (Rachel Covey). Will Giselle find happiness ever after in the Big Apple?
Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada), another emerging Hollywood starlet, brings her vocal talents to Hoodwinked, the 'real' story behind the classic tale Little Red Riding Hood. Opening with a confrontation between Red (Hathaway), the Wolf (voiced by Patrick Warbuton from The Family Guy), Granny (Glenn Close) and the Woodsman (Jim Belushi), Hoodwinked splinters into four different tales as each protagonist gives the authorities (led by suave detective Nicky Flippers, an amphibian Hercule Poirot) their version of events at Granny's cottage. Everything you know about the Brothers Grimm tale is turned on its head (Granny is a hard-core snowboarder for one thing) in this fun animated feature.
Our Animated Kids' Flicks program is back with more free screenings of beautifully animated films from the ACMI Collection. This season the fairytale theme continues with some gems by Lotte Reiniger, a renowned animator who specialised in a unique form of black and white silhouette animation. Animated Kids' Flicks screens most days throughout the school holidays at 11am (some sessions begin at 11.15am - check here for details).
Plus, in our always popular free 'Kids in the Studio' workshops kids can release their inner production designer by creating their own characters, props and backgrounds and bringing them to life in their own animations. Setting the Stage: Creating a World Your Character is recommended for kids between 5 and 13 and runs most weekdays. No bookings are required - just drop into Studio 1 between 12pm and 4pm.
