Shortlisted student shorts take a stand
Launceston Secondary Animation finalist Alyssa Smedley's film
ACMI has discovered a fresh batch of student filmmakers, and they're concerned about digital citizenship.
ACMI announced today the finalists in the national Screen It film making competition.
This year students were required to create works responding to the theme 'Cybersmart', to get students thinking creatively about how they engage with the internet.
Entries covered topics such as what it means to be a cyber citizen, online communities and social networking, online language and information sharing and copying, as well as investigating topical issues such as cyber bullying.
A significant number of finalists chose to tackle cyber bullying, which has become a huge issue in today's technology-saturated society. This indicates to us that it is an issue important to school students, teachers and the wider community and it is great to see that cyber bullying is being discussed in the classroom.
What better way to learn about how to be cyber safe than by having fun and learning filmmaking techniques in the process?
For the second year running, the most popular categories were Primary Animation and Secondary Live Action, indicating a great confidence in harnessing technology among students, especially at a primary level. Contestants ranged from Grade 1 right through to Year 12. Entries from primary and secondary schools were split with 47 per cent of entries coming from primary students and the remaining 53 per cent from secondary students.
We received 172 entries from nearly 500 students representing every state and territory - from Red Hill in the ACT to Rose Bay in NSW; Caboolture in QLD to Caulfield in VIC; Marryatville in SA to Mandurah in WA; and Darwin, NT to Launceston, TAS.
The competition has once again attracted our most passionate young filmmakers such as Grade 5 student Rory Young from Victoria who won the Primary Animation category in 2008. This year Rory has decided to have another crack at the top prize and has been nominated for his animation, 'Virtual World'. First-time entrant Alyssa Smedley, a Year 12 student from Launceston College, has been nominated in the Secondary Animation category for her work titled 'A Facial Decision.'
Winners are announced on Monday 2 November and the Awards Ceremony will be held at ACMI on Friday 4 December.
