Screen Worlds: the final frontier

Screen Worlds
ACMI's new Screen Worlds exhibition

Our new free permanent exhibition is only days away from opening its doors.

Hoardings, shmordings. You just want to get inside and you can't. They are telling you there is nothing to see, but you know all too well there is.

There's been Pixar, Game On, Eyes, Lies and Illusions, TV 50, Stanley Kubrick. And they are just the exhibitions. There's also the incredible onslaught of rare and cult films, documentaries and animations from around the globe that you never got around to seeing on the big screen. Not to mention the workshops where kids and adults can get their hands dirty learning about making movies.

How much bigger and better can it possibly get? The answer is, a lot!

For close to four years, ACMI has been working its way towards the creation of an extraordinary exhibition charting the story of the moving image around the globe. A world first, this bold, engaging and dynamic exploration of the history and future of the moving image is now only days away from opening to the public.

Grounded in the all-consuming digital culture that surrounds, absorbs, seduces and hypnotises us daily, Screen Worlds: the Story of Film, Television and Digital Culture starts at the beginning and literally breaks down the moving image into all of its parts, investigating how it became such a dominant cultural force.

From the 19th century, the moving image has steadily evolved from early Chinese shadow plays and eerie magic lantern shows in Renaissance Rome to the invention of cinema as we know it in the 1860s.

Over time, the worlds of Hollywood and Bollywood became ever more expansive, Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon was broadcast globally and Mario Brothers became a household name.

Today the Internet and mobile phones are transforming the moving image faster than ever before and somehow ACMI has miraculously put the whole picture together in this highly interactive exhibition.

Looking into the future while also celebrating the work of the original masters and innovators, the icons and iconic moments, the people and the passion - and Australia's contribution - Screen Worlds will open its doors on Sunday 20 September as part of ACMI's first ever Open Day.

Please note: ACMI will be closed to the general public on Thursday 17 September, except for evening cinema sessions.
