setting the scene poster competition

Original poster for the 1933 film
Can you top this? Original poster art from the 1933 "King Kong"
Before you even step into the cinema, it's the movie poster that captures your imagination. We're inviting you to capture ours.

Setting the Scene explores the work of production designers - the 'architects of illusion' shaping the aesthetic and atmospheric spaces of a film. But it's the poster art that first draws you into the illusory filmic space - taking you from two to three dimensions.

What is the magical ingredient of movie poster art that grabs you at first sight and grips you for life? It holds intrigue, giving a sneak peek of what's in store; it may be mysterious, it may be obvious. It aims to tease, alarm, cajole and inspire - promising utopia, warning of dystopia. And, of course, it is designed to incite you to make a beeline for the box office. Art meets commerce.

To celebrate Setting the Scene, ACMI is giving you the chance to make your own (virtual) cinema history, and win a fantastic prize, by creating a movie poster that warrants the term 'cinema classic', even before opening.

We're asking you to design a strikingly original poster for one of the following four blockbuster films, coming soon to an imaginary cinema near you:
Tower Command  Action/Adventure
Basement Blade Horror
Scarlett Manor  Drama
Starfleet Timeslide  Sci-Fi/Fantasy

The most imaginative, compelling and convincing posters will be showcased on the ACMI website. One winning entry, as selected by our judges, will win its talented creator a brand new Wacom Bamboo Fun (medium) Graphics Tablet (value $300) plus a copy of Art of the Modern Movie Poster: International Postwar Style and Design - a gorgeous hardcover book chronicling the movie poster from WWII to now; from Polish psychedelia to Bollywood (published by Chronicle Books). Plus! The first 20 entries we receive will garner their creators a double pass to Setting the Scene.

Entries close Friday 6 March 2009. So sharpen your propaganda machines, and make us all wish Tower Command, Basement Blade 2, Scarlett Manor and Starfleet Timeslide were on long play at our local cinemas! Click here for entry guidelines.
