fight the good fight
Ecologista Universal of the Super Amigos
Super Barrio, Super Gay, Ecologista Universal, Super Animal and Fray Tormenta are the Super Amigos!
A quintet of modern-day superheroes masked in the guise of Lucha Libre wrestlers take their battle out of the ring to the streets of Mexico City. True to the code of Luchadors, their identities are kept mysteriously hidden (though the lycra costumes can be unforgivingly revealing).
These unlikely heroes are crusaders of social justice and they're the stars of Super Amigos, a documentary by Arturo Pérez Torres.
So, what incenses these masked men? Super Barrio (in red) is most known to revile against a corrupt government, Fray Tormenta (in gold) battles for homeless and impoverished children, Super Animal (in black) has taken to charging into slaughterhouses, laboratories and state-run kennels to challenge the inhumane treatment of animals, Ecologista Universal (in green) is a Don Quixote figure who struggles to fight environmental abuse and Super Gay (in pink) challenges the country's most entrenched bigotry.
This unflappable crew of juggernauts (with hulk-sized hearts) are fearless in their defiance of authority and efforts to do good.
Can the Super Amigos save Mexico City? Find out at the Melbourne Latin American Film Festival.
This year's eclectic and daring program also includes Isaac Isitan and Carole Poliquin's acclaimed documentary The Women of Brukman, nominated at last year's Sundance Film Festival, and Otto Guerra's rollicking animation Wood & Stock: Sexo, Orégano e Rock 'n Roll which blew audiences away at Cinema Brazil's Grand Prize Festival 2008.
And make sure you book your tickets for the opening night screening of Jonás Cuarón's The Year of the Nail, followed by a fiesta filled with live music, giveaways and a traditional piñata bashing. ¡Hasta pronto!
