Revisit the past to glimpse the future in your free DVD of a sci-fi classic

From plot props to trick shots, production designers harness technology to make seeing believing. Featuring a fascinating collection of storyboards, models, photographs, and concept artwork from Fritz Lang's Metropolis to Baz Luhrmann's Australia, Setting the Scene takes you on a journey through cinematic time via the studio backlot, to discover how film designers make the imagined real, on reel.

Visit the exhibition before it closes on 19 April to receive a free limited edition DVD of The Metropolis Case. Made possible by our friends at the Herald Sun and Madman, the DVD features an insightful documentary, detailing the masterful designs in Fritz Lang's iconic film.

Released in 1927 and set in 2027, Metropolis takes you back to the future with its consistent up-to-dateness, from the hypnotic high-rises crowned by the empiric New Tower of Babel to the 'other' hiding below the earth's surface. Reviewing the film, a young Luis Buñuel wrote: "Cinema is being used as a faithful interpreter, serving the boldest dreams of architecture . sets have become architecture, costumes and make-up become sculpture."

The Metropolis Case is a testament to the exhaustive efforts made in the 1980s to restore the film to its former glory. With time-bending themes twining science and magic, and scenes of a city spiraling into dystopian decadence, Metropolis still echoes.

We have one free DVD for every Setting the Scene ticket holder. Available while stocks last. For information about the exhibition, head here
